Heads Up--Nice Looking 1012's--Plus some nice gear in Ohio
Just saw these listed for $250--re-foamed and re-capped. They look mint so it seems like a good price-if they were nearby, I'd love to audition them. Anyone ever heard a pair of these? I looked at the LH library (hopefully we can look this kind of stuff up "here" soon) and for high frequency driver it says "Liquid-cooled Energy-refracting transducer". What exactly is that? On the same page at LH they list the Model 8 which looks to be much nicer (tangerine phase plug, mantaray horn, flatter frequency response, "walnut stained oiled hardwood" finish...). Is the 1012 ("Walnut Grain Vinyl" finish) more of a mid quality speaker as compared to the Model 8 series II? If so, maybe $250 isn't as good of a deal as I'd think? BTW, the seller sure doesn't know how to interest Altec collectors--he says in his description "Very smooth monitor like sound reminiscent of Realistic Mach II."

BTW, for our Ohio members (and "near Ohio" members like myself), I noticed these today--look to be in nice shape (they've got dual 414's). If in good shape--they probably sound great as is--I have a feeling with a crossover and h.f. driver upgrade (maybe a brand new 802G from GPA?) these speakers would KICK ASS! I have found that the price is usually somewhat negotiable at AudiogoN....

Speaking of Ohio--these look pretty sweet as well--902-8T h.f. drivers with a single 414...
